Governor General's Medal in Architecture
A Governor General’s Medal in Architecture has been awarded to the UBC Aquatic Centre. The jury of distinguished architects commented that “this campus building stands out for its luminous interiors. Being inside is like being in a white tent on a summer day, all year round. Outside, it transforms swimming into a rambunctious event, drawing in passersby and animating the campus.” Completed in 2017, the UBC Aquatic Centre has received global recognition and has been honoured with a total of 19 awards.
Tall Wood Buildings
Brock Commons Tallwood House has been featured in the second and expanded edition of Tall Wood Buildings: Design, Construction and Performance. The publication explains the typical construction types and documents an international selection of case studies, demonstrating the range of the technology.
The refurbishment of the UBC Hebb Building, a 1960s modernist building that houses the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UBC’s Point Grey campus, was recently completed. The extensive renewal included the reconfiguration of the six-storey classroom block to support contemporary pedagogy with extensive transparency between collaborative teaching lab spaces, a full seismic upgrade, and a new pedestrian bridge link to the adjacent Hennings Building.
