International Prize for Wood Architecture


Acton Ostry Architects has received the inaugural International Prize for Wood Architecture for Brock Commons Tallwood House at the University of British Columbia. Principal Russell Acton accepted the honour at the Forum Bois Construction in Dijon, France.
The International Prize for Wood Architecture is awarded by the press and is intended to stimulate the development of innovative architectural thinking using wood, while establishing links between countries where wood construction is playing an increasingly important role. The jury, comprised of chief-editors from international magazines relating to wood architecture, awarded the prize to Brock Commons Tallwood House for reaching an architectural milestone that showcases new uses for wood in multi-storey wood construction and architecture.

Design Competition Winners!


George Brown College has announced that Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Acton Ostry Architects are the winners of the design competition for The Arbour, a landmark, low-carbon, tall wood building to be located on the Toronto waterfront.
The Arbour will transform the Toronto skyline with an eye-catching, exposed mass wood structure that will incorporate solar chimney systems to capture and harness light and air for natural ventilation and ground source geothermal energy for heating and cooling. The Arbour will serve as an educational hub for George Brown College and will include a Tall Wood Research Institute and a child care centre.
The 10 storey, 16,250 square-metre facility marks an important step forward in the development of large span mass wood structures and is poised to be the first project of its kind in the world.
Construction of the $130-million project is scheduled to commence in 2021.

BC Premier’s Award Promoting Innovation and Excellence


Brock Commons Tallwood House has won the BC Premier’s Award Promoting Innovation and Excellence. Jarrett Hutchinson, Director of Building Regulations, Building and Safety Standards Branch at BC Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, visited Acton Ostry Architects to celebrate the achievement and to present an overview on how mass wood will be incorporated Into the next Building Code.
