The Duke, a new 14-storey mixed-use residential rental development with 202 units has started construction this month. The development is scheduled for completion in mid 2017.
Located in a busy transit-oriented node on the corner of Kingsway and 11th Avenue, the 4,925 sf residential development offers a unique and innovative residential typology for the area through the use of studio, 1 & 2 bedroom units arranged around the perimeter of the site to create an open air central circulation space from which the units will be accessed.
To be developed under the Rental 100 Policy, the project seeks to provide more high quality secured market rental within the city and requires that the building remain rental for a minimum of 60 years. It will therefore offer long-term rental housing options to both new and existing residents of the Mount Pleasant community.
The Independent, a 21-storey mixed-use residential development, located in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, has started construction. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2017.
The triangular tower reflects the diagonal slash Kingsway makes across the city grid while a cascade of cantilevered penthouses celebrates the eclectic, independent character of the neighbourhood. A tree-topped crown symbolizes the height to which the first-growth forest once soared, marking the summit of the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood in Vancouver’s skyline.

Russell Acton was interviewed to speak about the design for The Independent.
Construction of the new UBC Aquatic Centre has been taking shape over the summer. Construction began in November 2014 and is targeted for completion in late fall of 2016.
Targeting LEED Gold certification, the aquatic complex includes: 50m competition pool; 25m recreation pool; leisure pool; hot tub; change rooms; multi-purpose rooms; and, spectator seating.
The UBC Aquatic Centre is a collaboration of MJMA (MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects) and Acton Ostry Architects.
