SCALE-UP Classrooms

Phase 4 of the UBC Sauder School of Business expansion and rehabilitation brought forward a solution that accommodates both lecture- and studio-based learning, namely a hybrid of the SCALE-UP concept, which stands for Student Centered Active Learning Environment with Upside-Down Pedagogies.

The classrooms are laid out with a series of perimeter docks equipped with back-lit glass boards, flat panel displays, overhead projectors with each one interconnects with the other docks. Rather than teaching from their traditional location at the front of the classroom, instructors can choose to roam as facilitators in SCALE-UP classrooms built with optimum equipment to enhance interaction, support collaboration, and foster team problem solving.
